Wind power
   Gulf El Zeit

In November 2007, Italgen signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Egyptian Minister for Energy and Electricity concerning the construction of a wind farm with 120-MW capacity (possibly upgraded to 400 MW), thus curbing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by approximately 257,000 tons per year.

The initiative is in line with Italgen’s commitment to environmental protection and seamlessly integrates with the development plan promoted by the Egyptian government, under which it is expected that at least 20% of electricity will be generated by renewable sources by 2020. Italgen’s project, which is the first privately owned development of a wind farm in Egypt, will be located along the shores of the Red Sea in the Gulf El Zeit area. This is one of the windiest zones in the world with a wind capacity factor of 55% equivalent to almost 5,000 hours per year of potential running at full load.

Installed Capacity 120 MW (upgraded to 400 MW)
Area Gulf El Zeit                          (along the Red Sea shores)
CO2 * Savings 257,000 tons per year

* Power plants exploiting renewable energy sources can save CO2 emissions per kWh produced compared with one kWh produced by a modern cogeneration plant firing methane.
