5th June: The World Environment Day

05/06/2018

A day set aside by the United Nations since 1974, when the first WED (World Environment Day) was held, to promote a worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. This year’s theme is #Beat Plastic Pollution, if you can’t reuse it, refuse it” Why? Because the plague is dramatically growing and may become unmanageable. According to UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme), the most outstanding environmental organization, every year more than eight million tons of plastic wastes accumulate in waterways and beaches across the globe ending up in the oceans, affecting ecosystem. Despite efforts to clean and recycle mountains of materials the problem is still alive. Thence something more must be done!

UN biggest annual event calls for a global mobilization for action. Governments, NGOs, communities, individuals in over 140 countries are asked to concrete action starting from the rejection of single-use plastic items.

“All of us can give a valuable help to reduce this great plague. Small gestures can be fundamental tools for a necessary U-turn - said Giuseppe De Beni, CEO & Managing Director of Italgen. Today we are used to hear about environmental pollution, global warming, greenhouse gases, climate change: all urgent issues but not always perceived as such. It is necessary to promote global actions of prevention and common sense to avoid any dangerous evolution".

The promotion of actions of environmental care has always been part of Italgen’s DNA.  A strong Sustainable Development commitment has led the company to organise many eco-friendly initiatives, including an efficient maintenance program of waterflows converging to its plants, through sophisticated equipment and qualified staff, ensuring the release of waste-free water in the environment.

A process well detailed in the so-called EMAS (Eco Management & Audit Scheme) Environmental Declaration, witnessing Italgen’s voluntary compliance with EU Regulation. The document is renewed on an annual basis and is focused on a harmonious and balanced development of economic activities, sustainable and non-inflationary growth respecting the environment.

In order to beat plastic pollution, frequently caused by reckless attitudes, the company also promotes awareness activities towards its employees, encouraging plastic reduction and recycling, through separate waste collection.
