Clean energy as a core strategy for a green future

Italcementi Research and Innovation Center hosted this week the annual meeting of Desertec Industrial Initiative, a consortium aiming to create an industrial-scale market for renewable energies from North Africa and the Middle East to connect them to European power markets.

With more than 120 shareholders and partners coming from all over Europe - including Italgen – the meeting has been one of Dii’s most successful initiatives. Among the international speakers, Dana Younger, Chief Renewable Energy Specialist at IFC (International Financial Corporation of the World Bank), supporting private investments in emerging countries through the Clean Technology Found.

Wind and sun: clean energy from Sahara Desert to Europe

Desertec Industrial Initiative is a global energy solution launched in July 2009 in Germany with the aim of erecting plants in Sahara Desert and the Gulf to produce electricity from renewables meeting the energy needs of the MENA region and Europe through a maxi grid.

With an overall esteemed investment of about € 400 billion up to 2050, the project involves a growing number of industrial and financing companies interested in the development of renewable energies in the Mediterranean Rim. Italgen, Terna, EnelGreenPower, Unicredit and Intesa Sanpaolo joined DII from Italy.

The accomplishment of the project should grant 15% of European energy consumption with no CO2 impact.

A "pilot project” in Morocco

The first pilot project should be installed in Morocco, to partially cover the increasing energy needs of the MENA Region and of Europe where it will be transferred through a maxi grid to be built.

The role of Italgen

Pursuing our renewable energy diversification strategy, beyond the development of our hydropower plants we have been starting the erection of wind farms in the Mediterranean Rim (mainly Egypt and Morocco) and of photovoltaic parks in Italy.

Our main contribution to DII consists in a privileged knowledge of North Africa countries combined with a direct experience in the development of projects in the renewable energy sector.
