From an exhausted quarry to a sustainable solar plant: our commitment to the environment

Italgen, and Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), the Spanish leader in the photovoltaic industry, have signed an agreement for the construction of 6.2 MW solar plant in the municipality of Guiglia (Modena). A total investment of about 20 million euro is expected.

The plant, covering an area of over 20 hectares in an exhausted quarry of a grinding centre of Italcementi, is an important example of requalification turning a degraded area into a productive, silent and sustainable PV park, avoiding any visual impact on the environment and exploiting all available infrastructures.


The plant will be managed by Italgen and FRV and will start its commissioning in the second quarter 2011. Once in operation it will meet the energy needs of about 2,000 households avoiding the emission of 5,000 tons of CO2 per year.

This project is part of our Strategic Development. It is in line with the objectives of the "Agreement for the Environmental Protection" signed in July 2009 between Italcementi Group and the Ministry of the Environment, involving the former to reduce its CO2 emissions and to promote renewable energy sources using innovation technologies.

With this project, Italgen and Italcementi confirm their commitment to Sustainability turning degraded areas into smart, productive, “green” sites.
